Submodule 1: Image and Media Theory (KDT1)

Content:
This submodule introduces foundational concepts of both classical and contemporary image and media theory and illustrates the practice of theoretical analysis through selected examples. The empirical object of investigation is “Apps Against Apps” (Kurz 2020). At the center of the critical engagement with today’s culture industry are philosophical approaches drawn especially from semiotics and phenomenology. Media and image theory positions are presented and reflected upon within their social and historical contexts.
Objectives and Competencies:
Acquisition of fundamental media-theoretical knowledge
Application of analytical and critical skills within the social and media-related contexts of art and design
Development of visual literacy and the ability to interpret visual languages
Deepened understanding of media-based processes of mediation
Assignments:
Presentation, exemplary analysis of visual communication using image semiotic methods and the "walkthrough method."
Digital Portfolio Design @ Reutlingen University

Module: Digital Portfolio Design

Content:
This course focuses on the conceptualization and creation of digital portfolios within the fields of design, media, and visual communication. Students develop an understanding of portfolio strategies tailored to professional, academic, and artistic contexts. Emphasis is placed on the relationship between content, form, and narrative structure, as well as on the digital affordances of interactivity, responsiveness, and user experience. Throughout the module, students critically engage with current trends in digital self-representation and online identity, while experimenting with formats such as websites, interactive PDFs, or multimedia platforms. The course includes practical training in the Adobe Creative Suite(e.g., InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) as a primary toolkit for layout, visual design, and asset creation.
Objectives and Competencies:
Development of a personal digital portfolio aligned with individual goals and disciplinary standards
Critical reflection on visual identity, authorship, and digital media aesthetics
Technical and conceptual skills in digital layout, information architecture, and content curation
Proficiency in using Adobe Creative Suite for professional-level portfolio production
Understanding the role of digital portfolios in professional positioning within creative industries
Assignments:
Design and development of an individual digital portfolio; written reflection on design choices; peer feedback sessions and presentation of final outcomes.
